The tradition of snake worship in Hinduism has been going on for centuries. Believers in this religion consider the serpent to be a form of God. There are also many famous temples of snakes in our country. One of these temples is the Nagachandreshwar temple located in Ujjain. Nagchandreshwar Temple is located on the third floor of the Mahakal Temple in Ujjain. The biggest feature of this temple is that it is opened for Darshan only on the day of Nagpanchami.
According to mythology, Nagaraja Takshak himself is present in this temple. Due to this, the temple is opened on the day of Nagpanchami and the snake deity is worshiped. Along with this, Nagchandreshwar temple is special in many ways for the people of Hinduism.
The Nagachandreshwar temple has an 11th century statue, which is claimed to be nowhere else in the world. This statue was brought here from Nepal.
In the Nagchandreshwar temple, Lord Shankar is seated instead of Lord Vishnu. The ancient idol installed in the temple is a ten-faced snake with Shivaji, Ganesh ji and Maa Parvati. According to mythology, Sarparja Taksha performed severe penance to please Lord Bholenath. Lord Shankara was pleased with Sarparaja’s penance and then he gave immortality to Takshak Nag, the king of serpents, as a blessing. From then on, the Takshak king began to live in close proximity to God. But before staying in the Mahakal forest, he thought that his solitude would not be disturbed, for this reason his temple is opened only on the day of Nagpanchami.
This ancient temple was built by King Bhoja around 1050 AD. After this, the Mahaka temple was renovated in the year 1732 by Maharaja Ranoji Scindia of Scindia House. The temple was renovated at the same time. Devotees who come to this temple long to see Lord Shankar at Nagraj once. Millions of devotees come here on the day of Nagpanchami.
